Korg CA-30 Chromatic Tuner Review

Korg CA-30 Chromatic Tuner

This is a very fine tuner that allows you to tune any instrument, electronic or acoustical, "spot on." For the price I really didn't expect such a nice product. However, after reading about two minutes of instruction, I was accurately tuning my mandolin and guitar. It is very intuitive to use, is battery operated which makes it useful for on the road, and has has such practical features as auto turn off after non-use for 20 minutes so you don't kill your batteries should you forget to turn it off.

High accuracy and superb functionality have made Korg chromatic tuners the worldwide favorite. And now, the new Korg CA-30 joins the best-selling CA series of tuners. With even more features, like a pitch reference tone and marks for pure major thirds and minor thirds, the CA-30 digital tuner packs basic functionality and convenient tuning functions into ultra-compact bodies.

Wide Range of Pitch Detection This compact chromatic tuner supports a broad range of C1 (32.70 Hz)-C8 (4186.01 Hz), allowing speedy and high-precision tuning of wind, string, keyboard, and other instruments. This hand held tuner is ideal for tuning even low-register notes containing numerous overtones that are often difficult to tune. A high-sensitivity microphone is built-in to this chromatic tuner, allowing easy and accurate tuning of acoustic instruments such as ukuleles. A separately sold CM-100 contact microphone can also be used to send the vibrations directly to the tuner for even more accurate tuning.
Ultra-compact body with a "Tilt Slit" Although the CA-30 is small, thin, and light, don't let its pocket-sized body fool you. The CA-30 chromatic tuner packs the functionality needed for tuning a wide range of instruments. From studio to stage, tuning is easy and convenient. The back of the unit includes a unique arc-shaped "tilt slit" that lets you insert a plastic card for use as a handy stand.
High-precision LCD Meter The meter section uses an LCD needle, combining the accuracy of an LCD with the easy visibility of a needle, and providing a stable display. Additional visual feedback is provided by LEDs that indicate pitch deviation.
Sound Out In addition to visual tuning via meter, the Korg CA-30 can play reference pitches from its internal speaker (Sound Out) for tuning by ear. Each press of the Sound switch will cycle through the A4-Bb4 notes, commonly used for tuning wind instruments. Alternatively, you can hold down the Sound switch to change the cycle to the semitone intervals from C4 through C5 (one octave), allowing reference pitches for any instrument to be sounded quickly.
Adjustable Calibration The Calibration function (410-480 Hz) of this chromatic tuner supports a wide range of standard pitches, and can be adjusted in 1 Hz steps for accurate and flexible tuning to any song or key. Thanks to the Memory Backup function, the Calibration and reference pitch are remembered even when the power is turned off. (However, these settings will be initialized when the batteries are replaced.)
Auto Power Off Function The power will turn off automatically if the unit is left powered-on for 20 minutes without performing any operation, avoiding unnecessary battery consumption.
Approximately 100 hours of Continuous Use Low-power consumption design allows an amazing 100 hours (approximate) of continuous battery life (A4 continuous input, meter mode, zinc-carbon batteries).
Three Year Warranty Korg tuners and metronomes purchased from a Korg USA authorized dealer now have a three year warranty.

Seiko SAT1100 Chromatic Tuner Review

Seiko SAT1100 Chromatic Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I started measuring the cent deviations of certain musical notes, I first used the KORG OT-120 tuner.
After a while I noticed, that OT-120 diplays a too large cent deviation if the pitch is not exactly at the
center of the scale. Then I ordered a second OT-120, and that unit had the same reading errors.
Quickly I returned the second KORG OT-120 to the seller, the first unit is out of warranty already.
Fortunately I found that SEIKO model SAT1100 tuner.
The Seiko has a better microphone response, furthermore it has a much a better input filtering than the KORG OT-120.
Higly dynamic guitar string picking does not cause erratic needle movements and the reading is quicker to take.
Tuning to 1 cent accuracy is conveniently achieved.
The SEIKO SAT1100 does only offer equal temperament tuning. For other temperaments you must have the tuning pitch tables available. Since the needle pointer is very stable, tuning off scale pitches is as easy as it can be.
Other SEIKO tuners, eg. the SAT800 display the cents tuning deviation as digital needle pointer and additionally they display the value in digital numbers in steps of 1 cent. The analog needle of the SAT1100 allows for finer resolution,
watching small changes as they occur, while the LCD types jump from cent to cent but are easier to read.
The only negative comment I give is about the design of the SAT1100 case and cover and the lack of a good table stand.

This is a great tuner. I wouldn't buy it to use on stage or in any playing situation, but doing intonation work as a guitar tech it works flawlessly. I run the Guitar Repair Institute and this little device is standard issue for every student that walks through our door.

Sabine MT9000 MetroTune Chromatic Tuner and Metronome (LCD) Review

Sabine MT9000 MetroTune Chromatic Tuner and Metronome (LCD)
Average Reviews:

The metronome function is decent, but could be louder.
The tuner cannot register any notes in the bottom third of my tenor trombone range. Whenever I play a low note, the tuner gets utterly confused and becomes unable to register higher notes as well. Definitely don't buy this tuner if you're a low brass player. Perhaps this tuner was meant for string instruments?
If you're looking for an excellent tuner, I highly recommend the Boss TU-12H.

Korg OT-120 Wide 8 Octave Chromatic Orchestral Tuner Review

Korg OT-120 Wide 8 Octave Chromatic Orchestral Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this for tuning my violin and piano, assuming it would do a great job on the violin (it does) but was wary of how it would work on the piano. I had been using a Peterson Virtual Stobe tuner for years, using standard piano-tuning techniques and equipment, and preferred tuning to a strobe rather than to a needle or LEDs. But battery leakage had put my VS out of commission. With the Peterson VS having its own imperfections, and a new one now running 3-4 times the cost of the Korg OT-120, I decided to give the Korg a try. (I also purchased the clip mike just in case its built-in mike balked at some of the overtones on my older piano.) I now use the Korg OT-120 regularly, not only to tune my piano and violin, but also as a practicing aid for the violin. It's very responsive and useful in verifying that I'm hitting pitch. After a few months of use I can say that the Korg OT-120 has exceeded my expectations for ease-of-use, value, and effectiveness for tuning my violin and piano, and for practice (strings). The tone generator is useful for ear training as well as for tuning. The display is smaller than I'm used to on the Peterson, but then again the Korg is much more portable. The clip microphone has come in handy for tuning some of the trickier strings at the lower and higher octaves, but I don't need to use it very often. Although I prefer the strobe for how it linearly visualizes pitch adjustment, it took less than half a tuning session to re-adapt to a needle/LED style display. Note: The Peterson has a larger number of tuning temperments than the Korg, so if you're tuning for early music make sure to review the temperments available on the Korg before buying. Nor can you store custom temperments on it.

Tune string and wind instruments in a flash with the OT-120, a new band and orchestral tuner that combines the accuracy of needle-type meters with superior functionality, wide tuning range and a new, sleek vertical design.

Vertical Design and Superior Visibility The Korg OT-120 chromatic band and orchestral tuner is intended for orchestral instruments, packing precise performance and sophisticated functionality in a vertical design that's easy to hold and operate. The Korg OT-120 features a dual-display, an easy-to-see needle-type indicator and a backlit LCD screen that shows the battery life, sound output level, calibration, as well as key and note name. Additional design features include a large dial that makes it easy to select the desired mode, soft-touch buttons and a rear-mounted stand that lets the band and orchestral tuner stand by itself. A sophisticated silver aluminum panel contributes to its sleek, new look.
Accurately Tune Orchestral Instruments Over a Wide Range Since we developed the world's first meter-type tuner in 1975, the accuracy of Korg tuners has made them the choice of artists in all styles of music. With its wide tuning range extending from A0 to C8, the OT-120 lets you quickly tune any type of band instrument including, orchestra, wind, string, brass or piano. The Korg OT-120 also provides a wide range of calibration to support concert pitches in a range of 349-499 Hz (1 Hz steps).
Smooth and Precise Tuning This band and orchestral tuner uses a high-precision needle-type meter to accurately indicate any pitch discrepancy. The speed at which the needle responds to the input can be changed over a range of three steps; you can choose fast, medium or slow speeds to match your tuning preference.
You can also choose from two tuning modes; Auto mode, which automatically detects the pitch of a single note you play on your instrument, or Manual mode, which lets you specify the desired note name. In Manual mode, the needle movement is shown in a range of 50 cents, letting you view the tuning discrepancy over a wide range. In addition to the excellent visibility unique to a needle-type meter, the LEDs located below the meter also indicate pitch deviation or a perfect match, making precise tuning easy even in dim locations.
Sound Back Mode for Tuning String or Wind Instruments The OT-120 produces a reference tone in a five-octave range extending from C2 (65.41 Hz) to C7 (2093 Hz). You can switch the output level in two stages. The large speaker allows for more volume while not being obstructed even when using the stand, ensuring that the reference tone is clearly audible.
The OT-120 also provides Korg's proprietary Sound Back mode. This mode lets you connect an optional CM-100L contact microphone to the input jack, and automatically make the OT-120's speaker produce a reference tone for the note that is closest to the input pitch you play on your instrument. The meter will also indicate the input pitch, letting you tune using your eyes as well as your ears for greater accuracy--and also providing a great way to train your sense of pitch.
Support for Transposing Instruments and Historical Temperaments For conveniently tuning any wind instrument, twelve types of transposing keys are provided in this band and orchestral tuner, including both sharps and flats. The Multi Temperament function provides eight presets that cover the most popular historical temperaments often used with period instruments. These are also ideal for checking unique temperaments used in classical music.
Long Battery Life The OT-120 is designed for an extended battery life of approximately 100 hours when running on two AAA batteries. It can also be used with an AC adaptor (sold separately).
Soft Case Included A durable, suede-tone soft case is included. Korg band and orchestral tuners purchased from a Korg USA authorized dealer now have a three year warranty.

Intelli Metronome & Tuner: IMT-301 with Temperature/Hygrometer Meter Review

Intelli Metronome and Tuner: IMT-301 with Temperature/Hygrometer Meter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this after seeing my boys' violin teacher using it during one of their lessons. Our first metronome was Seiko SQ50, but its max sound was easily drown out by my boys' violin and piano playing. Then when I first heard how significantly louder this was during one of my boys' violin lessons, I immediately ordered it.
This turns out to be the perfect metronome/tuner for my boys' both violin and piano practices. It not only tunes their violin perfectly each and every time, but it is loud enough that it doesn't get drown out by their playing instruments. Yet, it is small enough to be carried around inside a violin case or in your pocket. Some folks might not appreciate the fact that the source of the sound is on the metronome's back side and not the front. However, the sound is big and clear enough that it makes no difference for us. If we want the loudest sound possible, then we just turn it around.
It comes with a pull out stand, so it can be self-standing on any flat surfaces. The fact that it also functions as a temperature meter (in both farenheit and celcius) and a hygrometer is an absolute plus, as any serious musicians would need to monitor their environment in both the temperature and humidity levels for the safe keeping of their instruments. With this multi-functioning perfect unit, I don't think I'll ever be looking for another.
By the way, it's also a very handsome looking unit -- an additional plus! I'd highly recommend this product.

I have recently decided to attempt to tune my own piano, so I did some research and found out that the Korg CM-100 Tuner Clip was a necessity. No matter where I attach the tuner clip on my piano it picks up a clear signal and sends it to my Korg Chromatic Tuner. This product has made it very easy to tune my piano now and I never have to hire out to a professional again. The Korg CM-100 Tuner Clip along with the Korg Chromatic Tuner is a perfect combination to tune any instrument. As a music teacher, I highly recommend it.

The CM-100L Contact Microphone is a perfect compliment to any tuner that offers an audio input jack. The mic can be positioned to get a more sensitive measurement, while allowing the tuner to be positioned for easier reading.

The clip style mic is ideally suited for clipping on to the body of an instrument to pick up the tuning note directly with minimal interference from ambient sound. It can be easily clipped on to the bell of a trumpet or the headstock of a guitar, for example.
Tuning via microphone can be convenient for accurate tuning in noisy environments, and the CM-100L also lets you access Korg's Sound Back mode (available on some models), which produces a reference tone closest to the input pitch you play on your instrument.
The CM-100L jack is a 1/4-inch male phone connector.

Korg CA1 Chromatic Tuner Review

Korg CA1 Chromatic Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Korg CA-1 is a chromatic tuner which allows you to tune in any key. It features a quarter-inch jack for input and a "+" and "-" key for tuning in another pitch close to what you're in. Say I was in G and wanted to go to G1. Hit the "+" button a couple times, and bam it's now calibrated for that pitch. It comes standard with a small condenser mic built in so you can tune a woodwind instrument, trumpet, acoustic guitar or small squirrel. Whatever you need to tune. Super simple and easy to use, Korg has a reputation for producing the best tuners on the market. Weather it's rackmount tuning you need or the cheap-o $20 CA-1 Korg has you covered. My first one worked until it was lost during a show. I am willing to put money down that it would have worked up until now when I needed to buy another.
To the review that says it's "Tinny" sounding...Dude, that's stupid. It's a tuner. It doesn't have an OUTPUT! You plug in your guitar or bass and tune. You can't say that a tuner has any kind of real sound, since you're not really playing through it. A stomp-box pedal tuner may sound "tinny", but that may only be because it might not be true bypass circuitry used. Anyways, this is a great product and completely mandatory if you play an instrument.

Korg CA-40 Large Display Auto Chromatic Tuner Review

Korg CA-40 Large Display Auto Chromatic Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am not a musician, but I love "playing" the ukulele as a way to amuse myself and relax at the end of a long day. Unfortunately I have trouble tuning my instrument because I am not so blessed with a tin ear. I have trouble determining when I have my uke strings in tune. I can get close, but often an off pitch string sounds OK to me.
I really never heard of an electronic tuner before I discovered the Korg CA-40 as a recommended product based on my purchasing history on the [...]. The price tag on the thing was so cheap I thought I could buy one and gamble that it was a remedy for my problem tuning the ukulele.
The tuner arrived and I was amazed at how easy it was to use and how nice my ukulele sounded once it was tuned properly. The Korg CA-40 "listens" to a string and an easily read screen along with a series of lights tell me what note a given string is sounding. The device automatically shows if a string is sharp or flat so I know to tighten or loosen it on the way to the proper sound.
I read some reviews of the Korg CA-40 by real musicians and was quickly intimidated by jargon and comments I didn't understand. I thought the tuner might be something a genuine amateur would find overly complicated to use. Not so--actually the tuner is probably more useful to a novice with a dumb ear than to the pro with perfect pitch. This thing is a winner.

Korg MA-30 Ultra Compact Digital Metronome Review

Korg MA-30 Ultra Compact Digital Metronome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is chock full of features and hands-down the best budget portable metronome on the market, with only one caveat which'll be mentioned later. A terrific buy for students.
Battery life is great, getting around 200 hours out of two AAs. The display is clear and easy to read. I've dropped it once and it didn't cause any problems. For a digital metronome, the beep isn't an irritating chirp as some other metronomes tend to be.
It can generate any tone on the chromatic scale for manual tuning, and even allows you to adjust the pitch slightly away from A440 if you need to (sometimes necessary, especially for wind players playing outdoors in the extreme cold)
It can handle 1 - 7 beats per measure, and can give you triplets, 8ths or 16th notes on top of that.
It has a handy tap feature to determine tempo.
This isn't perfect, it's not a Dr. Beat (the best metronome on the market, period). The volume control is very sensitive, and if you have it in your pocket you can easily accidentally blast your ears with headphones on. An LED would be a nice addition.
The caveat mentioned earlier is this: Most people prefer a dial to adjust tempo as opposed to the up and down buttons of this model (The Matrix MR500, MR800 and the Seiko SQ50 have less features and lack a volume control, but do have a dial and LED). Still, for the price and the features, you can't beat it.

Sophisticated Rhythm Patterns 13 different rhythms are built-in to this electronic metronome so you can practice to more than just a click track. Reference Pitches The MA-30 features twelve reference pitches (C4 -B4) for tuning on the go, with adjustable calibration of A4 from 438-445 Hz.
Tap Tempo The MA-30's tempo adjusts from 40 to 208 BPM. You can also use the tap function for setting the tempo manually.
