Yamaha Portable Grand DGX505 Electronic Keyboard Piano Review

Yamaha Portable Grand DGX505 Electronic Keyboard Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The acoustic sounds that this keyboard produces are impressive. The grand piano, horns, guitars, and drums are excellent. The built-in songs demonstrate the sonic capabilities of the instrument very well. The keyboard touch response is adequate for all but lead-fisted pounders. The user interface is, for the most part, clear and easy to use with many short-cut procedures built-in. The display is bright, easy to read, and well organized. Of course, the built-in learning system, easy to use recorder, metronome, rhythm patterns, and accompaniments make this an excellent choice for beginning muscians. Yet, the acoustic sounds are good enough for even more advanced players and could easily be the perfect instrument for one-man-band type performers. The stereo speakers produces clean, spacious sound that gives the music a lifelike feel. Where this keyboard begins to fall short is for more experienced and technically astute players who would prefer to have more powerful and complex functions built-in. Like better, more extensive effects processing, a more robust sequencer, an arppegiator, a more versitile rhythm processor, more one-touch/twist accessible sound modifiers, more internal user memory, a more responsive, weighted keyboard, etc. Of course, all these things come with a price and adding them would bump-up the price of the keyboard - which is one of the most attractive things about it! Typically, for less than $600 you can own one ... not many instruments of this caliber can make that claim! I hope Yamaha continues this line with just a little beefier, more expandable model. In particular they need to replace the Smart Media card slot with a USB port that will allow plugging in any of the myriad of cheap USB memory devices currently available for offline storage. Also, I would add more user accessible internal memory (relatively cheap). I would beef-up the sequencer and add some additional effects / processing options. And, I would add an expansion slot for additional sound sets and/or add-on functionality. Nonetheless, for the money, the sound, and the playability, you can't beat this instrument. I liked it the first time I saw/played it and I still do (after a year of owning it). Good job Yamaha!

Casio CTK810 Keyboard
This is a fine solid keyboard if you are looking to learn a couple of songs and have a good sound. Even if you want to get a keyboard for your kids, as well as a good item for amusement. It is equipped with several voices, functions, and a teaching method. It is Touch Sensitive, so you can express yourself fully and it has USB connectivity that other brand's similar models lack.
It's an excellent option for your first keyboard.

Alesis NanoVerb 18-Bit Digital Effects Processor Review

Alesis NanoVerb 18-Bit Digital Effects Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Item is surprisingly small and compact. Easily fits into my gear bag.
Sounds great, as long as you keep the levels down. The effect is really noticeable at low leverls, and if you turn it up, it can feedback with some seriously reverbrated sounds. Some of the effects don't seem that useful, but most are good for different applications, for instance, one sounds great for vocals, but sounds too spacious for guitar, and vice versa. Chorus sounds very nice, its a more subtle effect. Rotary speaker sounds okay, but not up to par with dedicated units. Flanger is fun, and sounds great, but doesn't seem very useful.

Enjoy lush hall, plate and room reverbs, rich true stereo chorus, rotary speaker emulation and useful multi-effects with the 16 preset effects algorithms packed into the Alesis NanoVerb digital effects processor. The NanoVerb's 18-bit digital converters ensure sonic quality for use with any effects application--from guitar rigs to studio recording. The front panel adjust knob allows you to tweak NanoVerb's great-sounding programs until they're just right for your music, while the Input/Output levels and Mix controls ensure proper effect levels for a wide variety of applications.

Effects Overview
Concert Hall (3 Programs) This is a simulation of a large concert hall. Halls tend to be large rooms with lots of reflective surfaces, where sounds can swim around, changing timbre over time. This is a classic reverb that sounds good on just about anything. Try it on vocals, drums, acoustic, electric, or orchestral instruments.
Hall 1: A large bright hall program--works well for almost anything, try it on drums, guitars or vocals.
Hall 2: A warmer hall program--especially adds depth and character to acoustic guitars and pianos with it's decay set long.
Hall 3: A medium hall with 12ms of predelay before the reverb starts. It sounds great on big rock snares, but try it on vocals and electric guitar, too.

Real Room (3 Programs) This algorithm gives you the sound of a medium size studio room. This algorithm uses a lot of processing power for a rich sound and smooth decay. It has a punchier, bigger sound than a hall reverb, which makes it good for rock and dance music. The attack is also more reflective. It sounds good on drums, keyboards and guitars.
Room 1: A hardwood studio room with a lot of early reflection slap for big drum sounds; also works well for acoustic instruments, especially with the decay turned up.
Room 2: Perfect for adding a little ambiance to a dry track. Try it on antiseptic synth sounds or on dry, unplugged mixes with the decay set short.
Room 3: Ideal for acoustic guitars and classical instruments, this program emulates a warmer studio room.

Plate Reverb (3 Programs) This is a simulation of a classic echo plate, a 4' by 8' suspended sheet of metal with transducers at either end used to produce reverb. Popular in the 1970's, it is still prized for its transparent sound, particularly on vocals and guitars. It works well for a lush lead vocal, piano, or guitar, especially when looking for a classic rock and roll sound.
Plate 1: A classic bright vocal plate for pristine lead and background vocals.
Plate 2: A warmer variation of the previous program, great for adding sustain on acoustic guitar and strings.
Plate 3: A more realistic simulation of a vintage tube plate reverb. It has very little bottom end, which makes it great for snappy snares and skinny guitars.

Nonlinear (1 Program) In the mid '80s, a certain British producer/engineer (who shall remain anonymous) discovered a clever way of creating a huge drum sound. He would place the drum set in a large, reverberant room, mic the room and chop off the end of the reverb tail with a noise gate. When this sound caught on, digital reverbs began to be released with a "Nonlinear" program, which simulated this effect. In the end their simulation became more widely used than the effect it was trying to emulate, and the non linear reverb earned it's place in effects history.
Nonlinear: A classic example of the mid-80's "Nonlin" gate program, most commonly used on snares and toms, but can also spice up brass stabs and percussion.

Reverb Parameter Adjust -- Decay The reverb decay determines how long the reverb will sound before it dies away. Turning up the reverb decay will have the effect of increasing the room's size. Generally, classical, jazz, and ballad styles will use longer decay times than uptempo rock or dance music.
Pitch Based Effects (5 Programs) Pitch based effects alter the pitch and delay of a signal in various ways to produce "layered" timbres that are more complex than the original signal. Some of these effects are achieved by splitting the signal into at least two parts, effecting the pitch of one of the parts, then mixing them back together. This eventual mixing is essential since the overall sound of the effect is achieved by the difference between the dry, uneffected signal and the effects signal.
Chorus: Achieved by splitting the signal into four parts with a dry signal and a separate detuning section for both left and right channels. The detuning is further effected by being modulated by an LFO (low frequency oscillator), which causes the detuning to vary. The NanoVerb's chorus has individual LFOs controlling the left and right sides, set at different rates. This effect, called true stereo chorus, often has a wider stereo image than regular stereo chorus effects.
Flange: First used in the 1960s, "flanging" was achieved by the use of two tape recorders that would record and play back the same program in synchronization. By slowing down one tape machine, and then letting it catch up with the other, different phase cancellations would occur at different frequencies.
Rotary: The Rotary effect emulates a rotating speaker. This effect was extremely popular during the 1960s and was achieved by mechanically rotating the speakers to produce complex timbral changes. The lezlie speaker system is most often used with tone-wheel organs, but is occasionally used for guitar amplification as well. When changing the speed between fast and slow, the effect will slowly ramp to the new speed rather than change abruptly, just as the original would do.
Chorus/Room 1: A layered true stereo chorus and large room reverb. It works great on guitars, synths and electric pianos.
Chorus/Room 2: Adds a delay to the chorus/room sound for a different flavor. It works well for slow, funky guitars or big ballad solos.

Delay (1 Program) Delay is a discrete echo repeat, unlike the rapid wash of repeats that create reverb effects. It is useful for adding depth to a track or performance if reverb is adding too much coloration to the sound.
Delay: This program provides a delay of up to 1270 ms. The delay time can be adjusted in 10 millisecond increments. This is a useful utility program which can add space to vocals or instruments without "muddying up" a mix.

I bought this because the first set of batteries wore out quickly, and there are three of us that use the metronome. The kids use it to time their practice and as a metronome, I use it for teaching piano. So I thought I would save money on batteries by buying the adapter. Mostly what I have found that where I need to use the metronome, I either don't have access to a plug or just don't want to bother. And unless you are putting your metronome in one place and leaving it, don't bother with buying this adapter.

ION Audio Profile Pro USB DJ Turntable (Non Factory Sealed) Review

ION Audio Profile Pro USB DJ Turntable (Non Factory Sealed)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rec'd this turntable for christmas and haven't stopped using it. It does exactly what it was made to do, convert vinyl to mp3s or cds. I don't understand why someone would buy this item to be used as a turntable to listen to their records. The product is a USB turntable to Convert. Oh well, the only part I wasn't thrilled with was having to download itunes software. The "ez vinyl" that comes with this transfers the recorded media to itunes. Not a problem, I just dragged and dropped to windows media player and either burned cds or sync to my mp3 player (it is not an ipod). The additional software in the box, "audacity" took out the clicks and cracks without much work on my part. You can also convert 78's with the audacity software.
This item looks great (with it's smooth black piano finish) and so far has done a wonderful job. I can finally get some real oldies transfered to my mp3 player. I can honestly say this is the best gift I rec'd this year and recommend it highly.

Soft Way to Mozart piano teaching software Review

Soft Way to Mozart piano teaching software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the delux software for my 2 1/2 year old after researching on all other available options and felt the need to leave a feedback. I am a music teacher for 20+ years. For American kids who don't get forced to practice and for younger children ( age 6 and under), the most difficult of my job is to teach them how to read music --most parents pay piano teachers to teach reading music. I wish I can teach them "music" instead of how to read notes repeatedly. Given that, doremifasoft is the best method I've seen in terms of teaching reading music an easy/fun/efficient way. I like it that the software has left/right/both hands and students can get on playing real song with real staff music notes right away. My 2 year 8 month toddler was able to play hot cross buns (right hand) on her own in a few minutes -- that's how easy to get started. The softare offers lots of games which i think beating around bushes -- I would just start with playing real songs. There are problems too 1. The software can not replace a teacher to teach rhythm. .2 Sample songs are too fast to be used as a demo --- they should have a slower version and a normal speed version. 3. Setting up the software was so much pain for me and there is not much tech support from doremifasoft nor from Casio nor the midi wire connection manufacture. Before u buy it, I definitely recommend that you download doremifasoft free demo and make it work consistanly. The software may not work with your computer or keyboard. Make sure the midi connection is compatible to ur computer operating system. So far my software and piano sometimes have a delayed response--annoying when you are in a middle of a song. 4. Deluxe version is probably a waste of money because by the time you learned to play the standard versions songs, you've known how to play any songs. 5. It's a great software but like all other music software, it can not replace a teacher/parent. As a parent, you definitely still need to support your child's pracice. A teacher is crucial so the kids are hitting keys with the right way and eventually playing "music" beautifully instead of hitting video-game notes. Hope this helps those who are considering buying it.

I promise you will not be sorry purchasing this sampling / workstation. Roland once again delivers precision and quality in this keyboard. It gives you complete control over sampling editing and allows you to create an extensive library of sampled and new sounds. Along with its 16 track workstation you get 4 audio sampling tracks that samples 16 bit and 24 bit sounds/instruments. I've owned Roland for years and I'm not a representative for their company. If you study the price of other keyboards, you will learn that others do not offer this much for this price. Treat yourself and your talent and buy this keyboard. Your studio will thank you!

I have had this keyboard for about six years. I grew up playing my parent's piano and I wanted something to play on until I got a piano of my own. For the price, this was PERFECT...once I added the sustain pedal. It will allow you to play many notes at once (polyphonics) and you can record 2 songs in the memory banks. It does have Midi ability to hook up the the computer but I have never tried that function out. The keys are touch sensitive, piano mode is realistic sounding and in perfect tune so that I can play along with YouTube songs, such as the Beatles Live performances. It has some fun sound effect options as well. I LOVE this keyboard and it has gotten me by quite nicely without having the real thing.

Hello spiritual family,
This instrument was played using many sounds and recorded. I then went far away (downstairs) and turned the instrument down low before doing so. This is how I test the quality of the truthfullnes of the note and tones from far away. I heard all the notes I played and the tone sounded very much the same. If it were any quieter I only would not hear it, I mean its excellently clear from far away and a joy to any one that is in the other room (perhaps). This instrument might have been $200, but now it is only $99.00. New ahl sound technology. If you can find it for lower its even a better deal. It has synthesizer sounds like voice 306 too. Reverb can be put up to ten and its very noticeable, even from a far distance. And it has a piano style not shown in the picture! The pants of the keys can be seen the lower shelf if cut and it looks like a wooden piano from the over all view.

M-Audio Keystation 49e 49-Note USB MIDI Controller Keyboard Review

M-Audio Keystation 49e 49-Note USB MIDI Controller Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As somebody who does all of my music recording and editing using software, I was looking for something with the right features for what I do. If you're familiar enough with your software, this keyboard will do the job. However, it has several short-comings.
First, the keys are very "springy". They actually resist depression more than one would expect. Although the keyboard is velocity-sensitive, the "springiness" actually makes it difficult to control the sensitivity. If you've played on better keyboards, or have never played on a velocity-sensitive keyboard, it will require some "re-learning". Also, 49 keys has a disadvantage in that an entire octave is missing as compared to larger keyboards. Having moved from a 61 key to a 49 key keyboard, you realize how important the additional octave is. However, you can shift the pitch an entire octave using the dedicated keys.
This controller lacks a display. Higher-functions (such as changing MIDI channels or programs) are accessed by pressing an advanced button and one of the keyboard's keys. This requires consulting the manual, especially when you need to do something you don't do on a regular basis. On a positive note, you can assign the volume slider and modulation wheel to any controller you choose, which is helpful for controlling pan, portamento, breath, or any other effect. You can also change the functionality of the "octave" keys, so that you can change the selected program(sound) incrementally. This can be extremely confusing at times -- I plan on cutting and pasting sections of the manual directly onto the unit's body for easy reference.
If using USB, the keyboard requires no power supply. There is a small power switch located on the back of the unit, however, which must be turned on in order for the PC to recognize the USB device. I often find myself forgetting to turn it on. The dedicated MIDI out jack is handy for connecting to legacy MIDI equipment, but since no power supply is included, you'll need to find your own universal adapter. However, using USB means I have one less thing to plug into the power strip.
The unit has significant weight, more than I thought it would have. It's definitely a sturdy unit. But this definitely isn't the best of the lot; it will do the job of a "controller" for under $100. Recommended -- "yes" -- but only if you have a little patience and prior knowledge of MIDI, MIDI controllers, and keyboards.
